"Ailene "Herring, age 91, of Willmar and formerly of Atwater, died Thursday morning, Feb. 3, at the Willmar Care Center.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 8, at St. John Lutheran Church in Atwater. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home.
Margaret Eileen Herring - she always went by "Ailene" -was born October 9, 1919, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of James "Pete" and Lena (Mosetter) Herring. At age seven, she moved with her family to the Atwater where her father owned and operated the telephone exchange. She graduated from Atwater High School in 1937 and St. Cloud Teachers College in 1942. She taught elementary school in Minnesota, and for a short interlude in Washington state. Most of her teaching career was in Redwood Falls, MN where she taught elementary education for many years. She retired in 1979 and returned to the Atwater area.
She was a member of the Grove City Chapter of the American Association of University Women. Ailene loved cats and was a strong supporter of the Humane Society. She loved reading mysteries, the color purple and traveling to see the world. Her family was also extremely important to her.
She is survived by a sister: Marjorie (and Bill) Peik McKay of Penney Farms, FL; several cousins, nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother: Catherine; and two sisters: Lois Fisher and Florence Pierce.
