Alf G. Hustoft, age 83, of Willmar, died Saturday, March 21, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Barbara Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery in Willmar. Military Honors will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 of Willmar and the Finstad-Week V.F.W. Post 1639 of Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Alf was born August 21, 1925, in Willmar to Ole and Inga (Gudmundson) Hustoft. He grew up and received his education in Willmar and later attended the Morris Agriculture School. He was baptized, confirmed and a lifelong member at Vinje Lutheran Church. Alf enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943 and served during World War II until 1946. After his discharge, he worked with his father on their turkey farm until 1947, when he began work as a locomotive engineer for the Great Northern Railroad. On May 29, 1954, he married Jean Barge in Willmar. They lived and raised their three children on a farm south of Willmar. Alf retired from the railroad in 1986. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion Posts in Willmar. He volunteered at the Kandiyohi County Historical Society where he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of trains. Alf was an outdoorsman and liked to hunt and fish. In addition to spending time with his family and friends, his favorite pastimes included tinkering in the shed, building model trains, gardening and cooking. Alf died Saturday, March 21, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. He attained the age of 83 years and 7 months. He was a kind and caring man and he will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his three children, Debbie (and Lynn) Rice of Willmar, Randy (and Lauri) Hustoft of New London and Linda (and Jack) Hinz of Richfield; eight grandchildren, Karina and Anna Rice, Samantha, Sydnie and Olivia Hustoft and Dustin, Jessalyn and Colton Hinz; two sisters, Emma (and Wyman) Skoglund of Red Wing and Joan (and Wesley) Young of Richmond, Kentucky; his nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean in 2005; and two brothers, Harold Hustoft and John Hustoft.
