Ann Ward

July 10, 1916 — July 5, 2009

Ann Peck Ward passed away peacefully at her home on the north shore of Green Lake, Spicer, MN on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, July 5th. She would have reached her 93rd birthday in five more days, as she was born on July 10, 1916 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Fittingly, her journey ended where it began as she spent every summer of her life at the Spicer cabin. Her extensive knowledge of and contributions to the area enriched and expanded the Green Lake Historical Society.

Following graduation from All Saints High School in Sioux Falls, she ventured east to attend Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. Seeking even greater geographic diversity, she transferred to the west coast, and earned an English Degree from Mills College in Oakland, California.

During one of the most trying times in our nation's history, Ann married John D. Ward on January 25, 1941. In 1946 the couple moved to Kansas City at the end of World War II, when her husband, an Army Captain, was released from active duty. She supported her husband in founding and building a successful food brokerage business, Ward Marketing Company.
During her nearly fifty years in Kansas City, she was a member of St. Andrew's Church, the Friends of Art, and a founding member of The Carriage Club. In addition to raising three children, she found time to serve on the boards of the Child Abuse Prevention Association, the Crittenten Center, and the Rosebrook Center. She also served twice as the President of the Mills College Club of Kansas City as well as a six year term as a Regional Governor of Mills College.

She is survived by her three children Anne W. Siewert of Atlanta, GA, John D. Ward Jr. of Kansas City, James P. Ward of Spicer, MN, ten grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Memorials services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Rice Hospice, 301 Becker Avenue SW, Willmar, MN 56201-3302.
