Ardis Fischer

November 29, 1918 — April 15, 2010

Ardis L. Fischer, age 91, of Willmar, died Thursday morning, April 15, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Memorial service will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday April 27th, at the Willmar United Methodist Church. Interment will be private at the Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Friends may call from 5-7 P.M., Monday at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and at the church one hour prior to the services.

Ardis Lorraine Fischer was born on November 29, 1918, in Wausau, Wisconsin, the daughter of Esther (Schroeder) and Herbert Scheide. She graduated in 1936 as salutatorian from high school in Park Falls, Wisconsin. Ardis worked for a year before continuing her education at State Teachers College in Superior, Wisconsin, where she roomed with her sister, Nona. She graduated with a BS degree in June of 1941 and was very proud of having graduated from college as many people and especially woman did not got to college in those days. She moved to Turtle Lake, Wisconsin to teach high school English. There she met her husband Willard "Wally" Fischer. They were married on April 18, 1942 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and they made their home in Minneapolis for about a year before moving to Willmar. Wally died February 17, 2001 after 59 years of marriage.

Through the years, the couple traveled extensively through out the United States, Europe, Scandinavia and Japan. They were one of the first to visit China when it opened up to tourism. They were both active in a local dance club. Ardis was active in the Athenian Study Club for over 60 years, played bridge and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Willmar where she taught Sunday School for many years. She loved to read, sew, bake and be with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Lynn (and Greg) Holmstrom of Granite Falls; a son, Lee (and Gena) Fischer of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; five grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; a sister; Nona Grunseth of Elkhorn, Wisconsin and two nephews, besides other relatives and friends.

Ardis was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Willard A. Fischer in 2001.
