Arnold "Arnie" Phillip Olson age 83, of Willmar, died Wednesday, December 29, at Prairie Senior Cottages in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 11:30 A.M. Tuesday, January 4, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be in the Lake Florida Mission Covenant Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 of Willmar. Visitation will be 4-7 P.M. Monday, January 3, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Faith Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Arnold Phillip Olson was born April 17, 1927, in rural New London, to Casper and Louise (Mickelson) Olson. He grew up and attended school in the rural New London community and was baptized and confirmed at Nordland Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. army in Europe during World War II. On June 12, 1947, he married Arlene Marion Lovander at her parents' home. They made their home in Willmar and Arnie worked as a bricklayer for Nelson Construction and other contractors through the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. In November 1958, they moved to their farm in Dovre Township. Arnie worked as a crop and dairy farmer while continuing to work as a bricklayer. He retired in 1992, but continued to work as a handyman and painter. In July 2009, Arnie moved to Prairie Senior Cottages in Willmar.
He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer, serving as a Sunday school teacher, usher, member of the funeral committee and on numerous boards. He was also a member of the Willmar American Legion and V.F.W. Posts and the Dovre Township Zoning and School Boards. Arnie enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially his fishing trips to Canada and Alaska. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed teasing his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Marion Olson; four children, Phillip (and Gloria) Olson of Willmar, Kathryn (and Willie) Maas of Monticello, Mark Olson (and Pam Helland) of Willmar and David (and Jannie) Olson of Glenwood, IA; eleven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Orlean (and Shirley) Olson of New London and Harlow (and Doris) Olson of Hawick; three sisters, Lucille Peterson of Portland, OR, Florence Thompson of Paynesville and Pearl Sohlberg of Minneapolis; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Violet Green; two brothers in infancy; and four brothers-in-law, Tom Green, Leland Peterson, Alton Thompson and Herb Sohlberg.
