Arnold A. Tipka, age 83, of Litchfield, died Wednesday afternoon, July 24, at the Emmanuel Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, July 29, at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Interment will be in Ripley Cemetery with military honors provided by the Litchfield American Legion Post. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church on Monday. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Arnold Adolph Tipka was born on May 21, 1930 to Fred and Marie (Zemke) Tipka in Litchfield, Minnesota. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Arnold was inducted into the US Army on November 15, 1951. He served as tank gunner with the 279th Infantry Regiment of the 45th Infantry Division on the front lines in Korea. He was discharged on August 14, 1953 having attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, the United Nation's Service Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge. He returned to his job at Anderson Chemical in Litchfield, where he worked many years as a sales representative, before beginning his own company "Tipka Sales", a wholesale, liquidation company. He was a salesman who could "sell ice to an Eskimo", and was loved by his customers and friends for his wonderful sense of humor and kind, teasing nature.
Arnold was united in marriage to Rona Nelson on June 21, 1958. Their marriage was blessed with three sons. He was a patient man, who took all three of his sons fishing and spent as much time untangling their lines as he did actually fishing. He was a loving, caring father who visited his son Brian every day, for 24 years, at the Emmanuel Nursing Home. Arnold fought his own battle with cancer with courage, dignity, humor and whistling.
He is survived by his sons, Garmon (and Anne) Tipka of Litchfield and Barry (and Dee) Tipka of Lakeville; five grandchildren, Ian and Devin Rea, Josh, Jake and Anna Tipka; and his brother Roger (and Doris) Tipka of Litchfield, besides many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rona; his son, Brian; his parents, Fred and Marie, four brothers, Leonard, Roy, Harry and Art; and two sisters, Loretta Wachholz and Alice Kipf.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Coborn Cancer Center, especially Dr. Hauge and his nurse Seri, the staff at Lincoln Apartments and the staff at the Emmanuel Nursing Home for the loving care you gave Arnold in his final hours.
