Astor Leroy Underthun, age 92, of Sartell and formerly of Willmar, died Tuesday evening at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 27, at Vinje Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Knudson officiating. Interment will be at Mandt Lutheran Cemetery in rural Montevideo. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Friday, September 26, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Astor was born on October 4, 1915, in Big Bend Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the son of Lars and Mabel (Larson) Underthun. He grew up and received his education in the rural Benson community and graduated from Benson High School in 1934. On September 24, 1935, Astor was united in marriage to Vernice Laurene Gilbertson. They made their home in Montevideo where Astor worked in construction and contracting for 3 years. He was engaged in farming for 20 years and also was employed for Jack Frost Poultry in sales and management for over 35 years, retiring in 1979. He most recently was employed at Target in Willmar until 2000. Astor was active in township, county, state and administrative activities. He was also an active member of his church, serving as an elder and member of the church council. In October of 2007, he and Vernice moved to the Country Manor in Sartell.
He is survived by his wife, Vernice of Sartell; six children, DuWayne (and Betty) Underthun of Willmar, Mary Buesing of Colorado Springs, CO., Randall (and Sherri) Underthun of Duluth, Deborah (and Joseph) Halter of Oshkosh, WI., Bonita (and James) Roeder of Independence and Jana Eischens of Sartell; twenty grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Grace Antolik of Benson, Hjordis Dahlberg of White Bear Lake, Blanche (and Gene) Gravlun of Brandon and Lorna (and Bill) Godfrey of White Bear Lake, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Lisa; one son-in-law, Thomas; and one brother, Blanchard.
