Bernice E. Aitken, 89, of Willmar, died naturally and peacefully in her sleep in the presence of loved ones early Wednesday morning, June 6, at the Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. Blessed be her memory! We celebrate her continued journey into the eternal and joyful presence of God.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Gran Lutheran Church in Rollag, MN. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Gran Lutheran Church Roof Fund are preferred. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Bernice Evelyn Aitken was born on September 4, 1922, at the family farm near Rollag, Minnesota, the daughter of Ole and Mathilda (Pederson) Ronsberg. She attended the Happy Hollow country school and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1940. Bernice helped with the family farm and worked as a salesclerk at Norby's Department Store in Barnesville. On June 16, 1953, she was united in marriage to Paul T. Aitken and they lived for a short time in Barnesville. In 1957, they moved to Minneapolis where Paul worked as an attorney and Bernice as a homemaker for 30 years. Growing up she was very active with 4-H. Throughout her life, Bernice was active in her church. She helped with women's serving groups, bible camp kitchen staff, and in earlier years Luther League and teaching Sunday School.
Bernice enjoyed entertaining people in her home, many kinds of music, embroidery, crochet, ceramics and playing the autoharp. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and cook. In 2008, she moved into Glen Oaks Care Center in New London, MN.
She is survived by her three children, Barbara (and Dr. Timothy) Swanson of Willmar, Bishop Thomas (and Rebecca) Aitken of Duluth and James Aitken of Minneapolis; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Orris Ronsberg of Moorhead, one sister, Helen Nelson of Moorhead and two sisters-in-law, Barb Ronsberg of Hawley and JoAnne Ronsberg of Minot, ND., besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul in 1985; three brothers, Marvin, Leland and Curtis and one brother-in-law, Art Nelson.
