Bernice Barber, 87, of Spicer, formerly of Renville, died Saturday, March 27, at Bethesda PleasantView Nursing Home in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at First Lutheran Church in Renville. Interment will be in the Renville City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. Memorials are preferred to the Harold Hoffman Scholarship Fund.
Bernice Constance Marcella Barber was born April 16, 1922, in Newfolden, Minnesota, to John and Anna (Anderson) Johnson. She grew up and attended rural school in the Sacred Heart area. She attended business college in Willmar and worked for Erickson's Furniture for a few years. On November 27, 1943, she married Harold Hoffman at Hawk Creek Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. They made their home in rural Renville, where they lived and farmed until Harold's death in 1982. Bernice moved to Spicer in 1983. On December 30, 1983, she married Jule Barber at First Lutheran Church in Renville. They made their home in Spicer. Jule died in 2005.
Bernice was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Renville from 1943 to 1982. She then became a member of First Lutheran Church in Renville and had attended Faith Lutheran Church since moving to Spicer. She was active in her churches and communities and was very influential in the selection of and working with the Harold Hoffman Scholarship at Renville Schools. She enjoyed taking pictures at Green Lake, bird watching and flowers. She also enjoyed traveling extensively. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She is survived by three sons, Robert (and Judy) Hoffman of Waseca, Lowell (and Jennifer) Hoffman of Belle Plaine and James (and Teresa) Hoffman of Hastings; a daughter, Joan Hoffman of St. Louis Park; one stepdaughter: Pauline Wallin of Albertville, ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, a brother, John Arlen (and Phyllis) Johnson of Sacred Heart; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Harold Hoffman and Jule Barber; a brother, Ray Johnson; and a sister, Gladys Olson., Harold Hoffman and Jule Barber; a brother, Ray Johnson; and a sister, Gladys Olson.
