Dr. Carol L. Plott, age 95, of Willmar, died Wednesday morning, November 28, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
A celebration of Carol's life will be held at Vinje Lutheran Church at 2:30 pm on Saturday, December 1, 2012 with visitation one hour before the service. Additional services will be held at a later date in Davidson, North Carolina by his four daughters. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home. www.petersonbrothers.com
Dr. Carol LeVan Plott was born on March 31, 1917 in High Point, North Carolina, the son of the late Reverend George Ermine Plott and Mary Pearl Miller Plott. Carol graduated from high school in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, attended college at Princeton before graduating from Franklin & Marshall in 1938. He attended medical school at Wake Forest before graduating from Medical School at the University of Virginia in 1943 where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
After entering the Navy Internship program at the US Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Carol joined the Medical Corps, United States Navy serving from 1943-1947. He served as Chief Medical Officer for the aircraft carrier support group aboard the USS Grayson DD-435, seeing action in the Pacific during World War II and was awarded numerous commendations and medals.
He served residencies from 1952-1956 in Lexington, Kentucky and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was in private practice from 1956-1959 in Heron Lake, Minnesota and from 1959-1965 with a practice in general surgery in Algona, Emmetsburg, and Britt, Iowa. In 1965, Carol joined the Spirit Lake Medical Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa and practiced there until 1980.
From 1980-1984, he served as Medical Officer for Huffco's Liquefied Natural Gas production site in Bontang, Indonesia. During his semi-retirement after 1984, Carol continued to do locum tenems work at different practices including the Veteran's Administration Hospital in San Antonio, TX, various Indian Reservations and private practices in Arkansas and Tennessee. Carol was inducted into the American College of Surgeons and was a board certified abdominal surgeon until his retirement. He and his wife, Helen, have spent their full retirement years in Willmar, Minnesota.
Carol volunteered his time and skills internationally in such places as Afghanistan and was an International Rotarian and Shriner. The measure of this man's life can be found in his character, in his optimism, in his joy and humor, in his courage, in his passion for what was good and right and in his love for God, family, neighbor and country. His family is blessed to have had him in our lives.
During the past few months, Carol was richly blessed by the care and compassion of Rice Memorial Hospice and his family is grateful for their immeasurable support
He is loved and survived by his wife of 40 years, Helen Plott, of Willmar, Minnesota, by his four daughters, Carolyn Reva Billson of Tampa, Florida, Sandra Leigh Rock, of Lake Forest, California, Mary George Hemphill, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Suzanne Plott Hervey, of Slidell, Louisiana; eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four stepchildren, Christine Lucas of Minneapolis, Minnesota, William Metz, of Mound, Minnesota, Diane Koupal of Adrian, Michigan, and Todd Metz, of Valrico, Florida, and their children and grandchildren; nephews, Thomas Plott, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bryce Levan Plott of Davidson, North Carolina and niece, Martha Rowe of Lincoln, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Bryce Plott and his first wife, Reva Mae Updike Plott.
