Charles "Chuck" W. Messenbrink, age 76, of Atwater, died Wednesday, March 9, at his home in rural Atwater.
Services will be 11 A.M., Tuesday, March 15, at the Atwater United Methodist Church. The interment will be in the Oakside Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 P.M., Monday at the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
Charles Wayne Messenbrink was born on November 25, 1934, in Jeffers, Minnesota, the son of Julius Herman and Edna Hope (Knott) Messenbrink. He moved with his family to California, where his dad worked in the ship yards during W.W. II. They moved back to the Willmar area in 1945 and he attended Willmar Junior High School. The family moved to a farm north of Grove City, where Chuck completed his education, graduating from Grove City High School in 1953. He then worked for his uncle for a couple of years before enlisting in the Army and serving two years in Germany as a helicopter mechanic and company clerk. During this time he met his future wife. After his discharge they were married at St. Catherine in Ontario, Canada, on December 13, 1957. They returned to the family farm and worked for his father for four years and then purchased the farm from his father. Chuck farmed for over 43 years and was also active in his church serving as a Chairman of the Board for 20 years. He drove school bus for 30 years, measured land for the ASC office for 7 years, and also did some welding and carpentry work and worked with his son. Chuck was also a life member of the Willmar VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Franziska of Atwater; a son, David Messenbrink of Atwater; a daughter, Debra (and partner Anna) Lapre of Middletown, New Jersey; and a granddaughter, Hailey Messenbrink. Also surviving are a brother, Richard Messenbrink of Meadowlands; a sister, Albertha "Peggy" (and Marvin) Sackett of Atwater; and two sisters-in-law, Ardelle Messenbrink of St. Joseph and Ria Nagel of Munich, Germany, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Julius Jr. and Lewis Messenbrink.
