Cheryl Tauer, 61, of Atwater, died on Monday, December 10, at her home in Atwater.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 15, at Harrison Presbyterian Church in rural Spicer. Interment will be at Oakside Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7:30 p.m. Friday, December 14 at Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home (www.petersonbrothers.com) and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Cheryl was born February 14, 1951, in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of Kenneth and Gloria (Magnuson) Peterson. She grew up on the family farm in Harrison Township and attended Atwater schools, graduating from Atwater High School in 1969. She then attended Willmar Community College and the University of Minnesota-Morris, graduating with a B.S. in Education. She then went to work as a teacher at Grove City Elementary. On February 5, 1984, she married Gregory Tauer and they made there home in Atwater. Cheryl later worked for the city of Atwater as deputy clerk and later city clerk/treasurer for 13 years and as a reimbursement specialist for the Willmar Regional Treatment Center. She most recently worked as a billing specialist for Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Cheryl was an active member of Harrison Presbyterian Church, where she played piano and directed Sunday school music. She was also a member of the Atwater Lions, Atwater Fire Dept. and American Legion Auxiliaries, and Jaycees Women's Organization, and was a United Way volunteer. She enjoyed reading, baking goodies, decorating cakes, coffee parties, horseback riding, cross-stitch, camping, and holiday parties. She also enjoyed summer parades, both watching them and participating as a clown. She loved spending time with her family and friends and traveling, especially her trips to Maui.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Greg; three children: Melissa (and Jacob) Houston of Franklin, TN, Matthew Tauer of Charlotte, NC and Mitchell Tauer of Atwater; a stepson: Andrew of West Bloomington; two grandchildren: Lucas and Cooper Houston; her mother: Gloria Peterson of Atwater; three brothers: Gerald (and Susan) Peterson, David Peterson and Dennis Peterson, all of Spicer; a sister: Brenda Powers of Vacaville, CA; numerous in-laws; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Peterson and a sister-in-law, Therese Walter.
The family would like to thank Carolyn Powers and Theresa Frericks for their loving care of Cheryl these past years.
They also extend a special thank you to Dale and Ryan Nelson for their concern and understanding during Cheryl's illness and passing.
