Chester J. Johnson, age 94, of Atwater, died Saturday afternoon, July 12, at the Meeker County Hospital in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Grove City. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, July 14, at the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Chester Jerome Johnson was born on September 16, 1919, in Swede Grove Township near Grove City, Minnesota, the son of Samuel and Mabel (Johnson) Johnson. He grew up in Grove City and graduated from Grove City High School in 1937. Chester served in the U.S. Army in Europe during W.W. II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. On September 3, 1949, Chester was united in marriage to Elaine Larsen. They lived and farmed in the Grove City area. In 1963, they moved to Litchfield and Chester worked as the Meeker County Assessor and Zoning Administrator. In 1970, they moved to Atwater and Chester worked as the Kandiyohi County Assessor and Zoning Administrator. He retired in 1985.
Chester served on the Meeker County District #1105 School Board and as the 5th District Meeker County Commissioner. He also served on the Governor's Tax Study Commission under Governor Harold LeVander and the State Board of Assessors under Governor Al Quie and Governor Rudy Perpich and as the President of the Minnesota Association of Assessing Officers. Chester was the Director of the Acton and Gennessee Townships Mutual Insurance Company. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and as a Sunday School Teacher and Bible Study Teacher. Chester also volunteered with the Diamond Lake Lay Ministry Program and as a 55 Alive Instructor. He was a member of the Atwater American Legion Post #375 and the Litchfield V.F.W. Post #2818.
Chester enjoyed fishing and his agricultural life style. He cherished the time spent with his family and was a proud Norwegian.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine of Atwater; one son, Mark Johnson of Grove City; one daughter, Melany (and Tim) Jones of Timmonsville, SC; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin daughters, Linda and Laura; two sisters, Doris and Florence and two brothers, David and James.
