Clifford James Ackerman, age 86, of Atwater, died Monday morning, Jan. 5, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, Jan. 9, at the Church of St. Patrick in Kandiyohi. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Willmar American Legion and V.F.W. Posts. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. with parish prayers at 7 P.M. on Thursday, January 8, at the Church of St. Patrick and will also continue for one hour prior to the service on Friday. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
Clifford was born on March 24, 1922, on the family farm in Forest Prairie Township, Meeker County, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Lillian (Rohrbeck) Ackerman. He grew up and received his education in the Forest City community and then began employment with the C.C.C camps in Remer, Minnesota, and in Rapid City, South Dakota. Clifford later worked at the ammunition plant in New Brighton. From 1942 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army and served throughout France and Germany with Company D, 17th Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division and received the Purple Heart Award. On August 21, 1943, in Litchfield, Minnesota, Clifford was married to Mary J. Hentges. Following his discharge from the service, they lived in California for 14 years where he owned and operated a painting business. In 1959, they moved to Atwater and Clifford became self-employed as a turkey grower, retiring in the late 1970's. He was a member of the Church of St. Patrick, the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post. Clifford enjoyed watching Vikings football games, collecting antique clocks, traveling to California and Arizona during the winter months until 1993 and spending time with his family.
He is survived by one daughter, Diana (and Randy) Smith of Atwater; one daughter-in-law, Susan Ackerman of Atwater; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Rose Krueger of Willmar and Bertha Quast of Watkins, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary in 2002; one son, Joseph; two brothers, Peter and Donald; and three sisters, Henrietta, Lorraine and Dorothy.
