Cynthia "Cindy" Yvonne Porter, 61, of Willmar, died Friday, September 13, at her home in Willmar following a battle with ALS.
Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 21, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Cindy was born March 23, 1952, in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of Sherwood and Charlotte (Blegen) Mellom. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1970 and from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in special education. She also attended graduate studies in special education at St. Cloud State University. On December 28, 1974, Cindy married Stacey Porter at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Cindy taught special education for Wadena Public Schools from 1974 to 1975. In 1975, she began teaching for Willmar Public Schools and taught special education for 18 years and then served as the Child Study Coordinator for 20 years until retiring in April 2012 due to her health.
Cindy was active with Education Minnesota and served as President of the Willmar Federation of Teachers. She was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church and was an active with the Altar Guild. Cindy was also extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage. She enjoyed reading, cooking, crosswords, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband: Stacey Porter, Sr.; two children: Margit (and Brian) Neal of Raymond and Stacey Porter, Jr. of Willmar; two grandchildren: Soren and Kasen; her father: Sherwood "Bud" Mellom of Willmar; a brother: Sherwood Mellom, Jr. (and Kristel Hart) of Willmar; two sisters: Kathryn Williams of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Kristen (and Terry) Tone of New London; her nieces and nephews: Mark Williams, Ryan & Shelly Williams and Kennedy, Kjersta & Chris Meium, Kari & Chris Hentges and Lyla & Macy, Erik & Jennifer Tone and Briar, and Jake Tone; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Charlotte Mellom in 2008; and a brother-in-law, John Williams.
