David Gafkjen, 66, of Sunburg, died Saturday, June 23, at his home.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, at West Lake Lutheran Church near Sunburg. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 and the Patriot Guard. Visitation will be 5:30 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at Peterson Brothers Sunburg Funeral Home.
David Warren Gafkjen was born in Arctander Township October 21, 1945 to Rudolph and Alice Gafkjen. David was baptized and confirmed at West Lake Lutheran Church in rural Sunburg. He attended District 59 and Sunburg Elementary school. In 1959 the family moved to Minneapolis. He attended Sheridan Elementary and Edison High school.
David entered the Army serving two tours in Vietnam. After honorable discharge, he moved to the Sunburg area. David was married to Mary Murphy on October 15, 1977 at West Lake Lutheran church. To this union two children, Daniel and Anna, were born. David worked at Willmar Manufacturing and TCI in Benson. In 1987-1988 David moved to Jackson and attended Jackson Technical College graduating with a degree in Electric Motor Repair. He started Dave's Electric in Sunburg and later moved the business to David Braaten's, Mr. B's, where he continued to repair motors and fix cars until his retirement in 2007.
David was a 20 year member of the Sunburg Fire Department and a founding member of the Sunburg Trolls Car Club. He enjoyed working on old cars and riding motorcycles. He loved dirt track racing, particularly Thursday night at the KRA Speedway. He could often be found in that Sunburg Café having coffee with friends.
David is survived by his wife, Mary, children Daniel (Jeni) Gafkjen of Spicer and Anna Gafkjen of Murdock. Four brothers; Roger (Mary) of Brooten, Vendale (special friend Ramona) of Sandstone, Allen (Nancy) of Sunburg, Larry (special friend Carol) of Alamo, North Dakota, and sister Sharon (Ronald) Monson of Murdock and sister-in-law Millie Gafkjen of Coon Rapids, besides other relatives and friends.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Alice; two sisters, Linda and Aileen; two brothers, Merle and Dean and mother and father in law, Norbert and Marilynn Murphy.
