Havre de Grace, Maryland

David William Sorum, 91, passed into eternal life in Havre de Grace, Maryland on October 26, 2024. He was born to Kermit and Corolla Sorum in Minneapolis Minnesota, on February 9, 1933. David was a beacon of joy and resilience throughout his remarkable life.

A devoted father and grandfather, David's son Matt fondly recalls taking photos of his father each time they parted, cherishing their moments together. Dave’s attitude about life was always very positive and inspired those around him. He often joked about his age skewing much younger, embodying the philosophy that aging is merely a state of mind.

Dave was raised in Edina, Minnesota and attended Wooddale grade school and in 1951 was a member of the first graduating class of Edina High School. He went to the University of Minnesota where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and was a member of Chi Psi fraternity.

Upon graduation he embarked on a career as a stockbroker in Minneapolis. Later he became a certified teacher and went to California where he taught math and was a high school wrestling coach.

A lifelong lover of horses, Dave raised thoroughbreds on his farm in Paynesville, MN. and raced many of them from Hollywood Park to Canterbury Downs. His passion inspired his sons Michael and David Jr. to become veterinarians. In the late 1960s he took a sabbatical from teaching and traveled across Europe in a Volkswagen bus fostering a spirit of adventure that inspired his son Matt to become a world-traveling musician. Dave also worked in a logging camp in Alaska, bringing along his son Mark, who later became an arborist and tree surgeon.

Known for his charismatic personality, Dave was the life of every gathering, effortlessly drawing others to him with his humor and warmth. He faced life’s stresses with a carefree demeanor, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

Dave cherished his time with family, and their joyful moments together reflect the love he shared and the values he instilled in those around him.

In his passing, the family finds solace in their faith, believing that Dave is now in the presence of God, experiencing eternal joy, peace, and freedom from earthly struggles.

A funeral and memorial service will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2024 noon at Green Lake-Spicer Funeral Home, 241 North Highway 23, Spicer, MN followed by a procession around his cherished Green Lake and reception. David will be laid to rest alongside his beloved son, Daniel.
