Donald Kalkbrenner

Donald Alvin Kalkbrenner, age 75, of Spicer, died Friday afternoon, Nov. 13, at his residence following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Church of St. Patrick in Kandiyohi. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM with Parish Prayers at 5 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Church of St. Patrick and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
Donald was born on May 15, 1934, in Bancroft, Iowa, the son of Alvin and Verena (Neuman) Kalkbrenner. At a young age, he moved with his family to Pennock, Irving Township and later to a farm near Lake Koronis. He received his education from country school in the Paynesville area and Paynesville High School. From 1954 to 1956, Donald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On January 23, 1957, he was married to Donna M. Starrett. They lived and farmed in Union Grove until moving to the Spicer area in the spring of 1959. Donald was engaged in farming his entire life. He was a member of the Church of St. Patrick, Spicer American Legion, the N.R.A., a 47 year member of N.F.O. and a past member of the Harrison Township Board.
Donald loved farming. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, joking around with his grandchildren, spending time at the cabin near Grand Rapids, watching western movies and John Deere tractors.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; five children, Mark (and Diane) Kalkbrenner of Spicer, Julie Kalkbrenner (and Thomas VanTassel) of Spicer, Cheryl (and Dave) Hoffenkamp of Atwater, Scott (and Amy) Kalkbrenner of Spicer and John (and Tracey) Kalkbrenner of Atwater; fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Maxine (and Allan) Kubesh of Olivia and Tooty Johnson of New London and one brother, Edward (and Doreen) Kalkbrenner of Paynesville, besides other relatives and friends.
