Donald Fordis Peterson was born on April 26, 1912, to Nels and Rose (Mostu) Peterson on the family farm that his grandparents homesteaded. He grew up in the rural Lake Lillian community and graduated from Atwater High School in 1930. During the Depression, he worked in the western United States and later returned to the family farm. On September 4, 1941, he married Doris Marie Watson. They farmed on the family farm until Donald's "retirement" in 1985, when they moved to Atwater. Donald served his community by being active with his church and serving several terms on the rural district 811 and Atwater Public School Boards. Donald continued to help on the farm past his 90th birthday. His last trip on the combine, helping pick the last rows of corn, was in October 2007.
During their retirement, Donald and Doris enjoyed spending winters with family in Arizona, as well as visiting other parts of the country. Donald also took up woodcarving and many of his pieces are proudly displayed in the homes of family and friends.
Donald's life is celebrated by his children, Carol (and LeRoy) Erickson of Blaine, Becky (and John) Upton of Glendale, Arizona, Arlys (and Jeff) Hess of Nevis, Donn (and Jan) Peterson of Lake Lillian and Lance (and Linda) Peterson of Cottonwood, Arizona; 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Evangeline Johnson and Beth (and Ray) Anderson; five sisters-in-law, Isabel Peterson, Dorothy Benson, Ruth Cazer, Ruby Watson and Eleanor (and Dan) Smith; two brothers-in-law, Eugene (and Karen) Watson and Dalton (and Betty) Watson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 65 years, Doris; an infant son, Neal; a brother, Joel Peterson and a great-grandson, Jack Erickson.
