Donald W. Slinden Sr., age 92, of Atwater, died Sunday morning, Aug. 11, at the Emmanuel Care Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Atwater. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Atwater American Legion Post. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Memorials to the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery Association or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Parking Lot Fund are preferred. Donald Warner Norman Slinden Sr. was born on April 7, 1921 in Acton Township, Meeker County, Minnesota (home farm), the son of Ole and Helga Slinden. He attended District 4 School (Little Red School House) through the 8th grade and was the last person to graduate from there. Donald graduated from Atwater High School in 1938 and later attended Vocational Ag. School. On November 20, 1943, Donald was united in marriage to Joyce Lindstrom at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City. This marriage was blessed with four children, Donald Jr. Wayne, Judy and John. Donald entered the US Army in 1944 serving in the Philippines and from there was sent to Japan. On their way to Japan the war ended. He was stationed in Japan for approximately one year and observed the peace treaty being signed. Donald returned to the family farm where he farmed and raised their family until he turned the operation over to his two sons, Don and John. They lived on the home farm until 1971 when they moved to their farm outside of Grove City and from there moved into Atwater in 1992.
Donald was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church his whole life serving in many capacities. He served on the Atwater State Bank Board, Director for 10 years on the Board of Land O'Lakes, Inc. Arden Hills, Director with the National Milk Producers Federation, Washington DC, President of Northland Foods, Shawano, WI, Director and Treasurer for First District Association, Litchfield, MN, Director with the Atwater Creamery and Soil Center, Atwater, served on the Atwater School Board Minnesota Extension Advisory Committee, 1983 State Friend of Extension Award Epsilon Sigma Phi and a member of the Atwater American Legion Post 375. Donald traveled the world such as Russia, China, Ecuador and the Baltic's promoting agriculture. He and Joyce also traveled to Norway, Sweden, England, Europe and all of the United States and many more places.
He is survived by his sons Don (and Helen) of Atwater, John (and Carol) of Grove City and daughter Judy Hudson (and Jerry) of Litchfield; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; sisters Bernice Slinden of Willmar and Violet Lind of Fridley; brother-in-law Charles (and JoAnn) Lindstrom of Litchfield; sisters-in-law Shirley Erickson of Litchfield and Areline Slinden of Litchfield, besides several cousins, nieces, nephews, good neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce of 65 years; his son Wayne and daughter-in-law Marida; brothers Harlan and Orwell (and wife Maxine); sister Muriel Berge (and husband Harold); brothers-in-law Vince Erickson and Morgan Lind and parents Ole and Helga.
