Donavon D. Evenson, age 77, of Grove City, died Friday morning, June 27, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, June 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Grove City. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Sunday, June 29, at the church and will also continue for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Funeral arrangements are with the Atwater Funeral Home.
Donavon DeWayne Evenson was born on February 16, 1931, on the family farm near Sunburg, the son of Henry and Florence (Swenson) Evenson. He grew up in the rural Sunburg community, was baptized and confirmed at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church, attended District #72 school and graduated in 1969 with his G.E.D. from Litchfield. On September 8, 1950, Donavon was united in marriage to Joyce "Lorraine" Gunion. They lived in Brooten and St. Cloud before moving to Grove City in 1963. He was engaged in farming and then worked as a house mover. He was most recently self-employed as a owner/operator of Evenson Excavating in heavy equipment construction, retiring as a 49'er in 1993. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. Donavon enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing card games, trips to Sunburg to converse in Norwegian and making people laugh. He also loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly.
He is survived by his fiance, Joyce Reich of Grove City; twelve children, Sue (and Steve) Toiser of Plymouth, Wayne (and Linda) Evenson of Murdock, Dean Evenson of Grove City, Gary (and Nette) Evenson of Caledonia, Sheldon (and Mary) Evenson of Grove City, Tom (and Kim) Evenson of Litchfield, Barb (and Brad) Turgeon of Pine City, Jack (and Jeanette) Evenson of Benson, Beth Isaacson of Monticello, Kathy (and Brian) Dilley of Avon, Brian (and Sarah) Evenson of Atwater and Keith Evenson of Hutchinson. Also surviving are 40 grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine in 2005; one sister, Lucille and a granddaughter, Jill Dilley.
