Doris Wilkowske, 98, died Thursday, September 2, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar, MN.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault, MN. at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. followed by memory sharing on Monday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Blooming Grove United Methodist Church.
She was born January 14, 1912 in Morristown, MN to Lute and Minnie (Herrly) Johnson, attended elementary & high school there and graduated from Faribault High School in 1929. After attending Normal School (Teachers' Training) she taught for 2 years at the District 21 Ecklund School near Faribault, MN. On August 18, 1932 she married Herbert Wilkowske and moved to their dairy farm southeast of Morristown. She was active in the Blooming Grove Methodist Church, served as a 4-H club leader, was a member of the Guernsey Breeders Association and other community activities.
She continued her professional development through extended campus and night courses at Mankato State Teachers College. After updating her teaching certificate, she taught at the District 40-1 rural school from 1954 to 1962 and continued at the Warsaw Elementary School from 1962-1971. For the next few years, she and Herb were the Federal Crop Insurance Agents for Waseca County.
From 1976 through 1991 they lived at Backus, MN and in Mesa, Arizona. In 1991 they moved to Willmar, MN so Herb could be on dialysis at Rice Hospital, where Doris volunteered for several years. She also volunteered at the Willmar Public Library. She lived independently until entering Rice Care Center and later Bethesda Heritage Center in 2007. She loved animals, was an avid reader and a master of crocheting, teaching many people those skills. She loved gardening, doing cross-word puzzles and Cryptoquips and engaging people in good conversation. She is remembered for her positive approach to life with a "can do" attitude and always having generous time for family and friends. She was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her three children, Lois Hamilton of New Castle, IN, Roger (and Marge) Wilkowske of Faribault, MN and Doug (and Mary) Wilkowske of Willmar; ten grandchildren, Bob (and Susan), Bill (and Donna), David (and Leslie) and Steve Hamilton; David (and Cathy), Tom (and Jane Rupel), Mark and Marilyn Wilkowske; Chris (and Hannah), Andy (and Erika Taibl) Wilkowske; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert in 1992, her parents, one brother, Milton Johnson and a son-in-law, Rev. William Hamilton.
