Dorothy Commerford

Dorothy G. Commerford, age 85, of Willmar, died Tuesday evening, November 1, at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 A.M., Friday, November 4, at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. The interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Murdock. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.

Dorothy was born on August 9, 1926, in Benson, Minnesota, the daughter of Clifford and Gertrude (Haas) Vadnais. She grew up and received her education in the Murdock area and graduated from Murdock High School in 1944. She then attended Teachers Training in Litchfield and taught school for a short time. On June 28, 1947, she married John Kenneth Commerford in Murdock, where they made their home. In the 1950s, they moved to the Willmar area and became members of the church of St. Mary. For the past 12 years, she was an active resident at Bethesda Heritage Center, where she enjoyed playing bingo, was on the Bethesda Residence Council, making greeting cards, clipping coupons and prepared Welcome and Birthday Posters for the 3rd floor residents. Dorothy had been an active member at the Church of St. Mary, was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and a member of the Kavanaugh-Helegson V.F.W. Auxiliary in Murdock. She loved being with family and friends, especially spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, baking sweets, collecting salt and pepper shakers, watching old westerns and game shows, reading the paper and especially listening to her favorite singer, Johnny Cash. She even attended a Johnny Cash concert with her son Danny.

She is survived by two sons: Michael (and Pamela) Commerford of Hutchinson and Danny (and Laura Buckley) Commerford of Spicer; and two daughters: Diane (and Lowell) Hjelle of Lowry and Bonnie Stoen of Alexandria. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law: Madge Commerford of Buffalo, besides other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: John Kenneth in 1984; one daughter: Patricia Commerford in 2008; one brother: Donald Vadnais; and one sister: Delores Sandin.
