Duane Westermann

Duane "Wes" C. Westermann, age 80, of Willmar, died Sunday morning, May 19, at Rice Care Center in Willmar.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Duane "Wes" Charles Westermann was born September 17, 1932, in New Salem, North Dakota, the son of William and Erna (Leuder) Westermann. He grew up in New Salem and graduated from New Salem High School in 1950 and attended North Dakota State University in Fargo where he graduated as a pharmacist. His first employment was at White Drug in Bismarck, ND. Wes became the Pharmacy Manager at White Drug in Bismarck, Minot and later in Willmar, Minnesota. Wes retired from White Drug in 1978 and purchased Valley Golf in Willmar, which he and Marty operated for over 20 years.

Wes was an active member of Vinje Lutheran Church and member of the Willmar Elks Club. He was a volunteer with numerous organizations throughout the Willmar community. Wes loved outdoor activities and spent time hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed flower gardening and time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Martha "Marty" Westermann of Willmar; one daughter, Denise (and Douglas) Schow of Woodbury; two granddaughters, Megan Larson and Emily Larson, both of Minneapolis; one brother, Walden (and Lois) Westermann of Spokane, WA; one sister, Carol Schwarting of New Salem, ND; besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Michael Larson in 2010.
