Elvera L. Mahn, age 85, of Atwater, died Saturday afternoon, Novmeber 8th, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11A.M. Tuesday, November 11th, at St. John Lutheran Church north of Atwater with Rev. Christian Strickland officiating. The interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 P.M. Monday at the Atwater Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services.
Elvera Louise Mahn was born June 2, 1923, Forest Prairie Township, Meeker County, to August and Freda (Schultz) Marquardt. She was baptized June 17, 1923 and confirmed July 4, 1937 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Elvera attended elementary school at rural District 71 and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1941. Elvera married Eldon Mahn of Atwater on November 2, 1948 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. The couple farmed north of Atwater several years then moved to rural Spicer farming there for 34 years. In October 1986, they moved into Atwater where they have resided since. Four children were born to this union. Elvera worked at the Lynnhurst Rest Home in St. Paul for a short time. She worked several years at the Meeker County Courthouse doing office work. After her marriage she was a homemaker, mother and helped with the responsibilities required of a farmer's wife. She was active in St. John Lutheran Church, rural Atwater, serving as organist for 20 years, church secretary many years, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She held offices of president, vice president and treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society. She was a member of the Atwater Area Block Nurse Program as a volunteer visiting the sick, shut-ins and elderly also driver delivering Meals on Wheels. Elvera was most happy when she could help with or babysit her grandchildren. She and Eldon spent a couple months each winter for many years in Phoenix, Arizona enjoying the warm climate and visiting their family who lives there.
She is survived by husband, Eldon, one daughter, Eloise and (Daniel) Mattheisen of New Hope, two sons, Elroy and (Sheri) of Phoenix, AZ, Elgene of Atwater, Elbert and (Roberta) of Spicer, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Elvera was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Wilfred (infant) in 1916, Oscar in 1988 and daughter-in-law LaCinda (Cindy) Mahn in 1991.
