Esther Ihnken, age 92, of Willmar, died Friday evening, February 20th, at the Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, February 26th, at the First Presbyterian Church in Willmar with Rev. Richard Underahl-Peirce officiating. The interment will be in the Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Esther Belle Inhnken was born on May 27, 1916 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Luella (Chevalier) and Oscar G. Haglund. The family moved to a farm in rural Windom and that is where she grew up and received her education. Esther first attended country school in her area, graduated form Windom High School in 1934 and she continued her education at the Mankato Business College. On October 1, 1939 she married Adolph M. Ihnken in Windom, Minnesota. She made her home in Windom while Adolph served during WW II. In 1950, they moved to Willmar and she was employed as a teller and secretary at the First National Bank and the Kandiyohi County Court House for 28 years. Esther and Adolph moved to Kandiyohi after retiring and lived there for several years. After Adolph's death in 1983, she moved to Centennial Square in Willmar and for the last 4 years has resided at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. She was active in her church serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and various other woman's groups. Esther was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 40 years, was a member of the Rice Hospital Auxiliary and also was a Senior Companion. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, baking, cooking and traveling, especially bus trips.
Esther is survived by one son; Douglas E. Ihnken of Wrenshall, Minnesota and one daughter; Patricia (and Dwaine) Walthers of Willmar. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband (Adolph in 1983), one sister (Scharlene Moulton), one brother (Warren Haglund) and one daughter-in-law (Yvonne Ihnken).
