Esther Kjos

February 24, 1914 — May 26, 2009

Esther Kjos, age 95, of Willmar and formerly of Brooten, died Tuesday evening, May 26, at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 30, at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Friday, May 29, at the Sunburg Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Esther was born on February 24, 1914, in Pope County, Minnesota, the daughter of Olaus and Caroline (Erickson) Medalen. She grew up in the rural Brooten community, was baptized and confirmed at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church and received her education from District #56 School. On December 6, 1930, she was married to Reuben Wiig and they made their home in the Sunburg area. Rueben died in 1935 and she and her son, Hanley moved back to the Brooten area. On October 14, 1939, Esther was married to Arnold Kjos and they continued living in the Brooten area. In 1979, Arnold died and in 1985, she moved to Willmar. Esther was employed at the Swift Falls Creamery. She also wrote various news articles for local newspapers and the Willmar Tribune. She was a past member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Brooten and The Joyful Messengers singing group. She currently attended the Maranatha Church in Willmar.

Esther loved to bake and cook. She loved cookbooks and clipping recipes from newspapers and magazines. She had her favorite things to make but also tried new recipes. She was always sharing her food with others. She enjoyed meeting with others for Bible study and praying for the needs of others. She loved people and had many friends who loved her. She had the gift of encouraging others and making them feel special. There is a destiny that makes us brothers and sisters. None goes their way alone. All that we put in the lives of others comes back into our own.

She is survived by her four children, Hanley Wiig of Columbia Heights, Fred (and Faye) Kjos of Green Valley, AZ., Colleen (and Bruce) Peterson of rural Brooten and Carl (Barbara Jean) Kjos of Willmar; six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands and ten siblings.
