Evelyn Nordis Broste was born on June 5, 1923 in rural Hanska, Minnesota, the daughter of Mattie (Grotto) and Peter G. Broste. She grew up in that area and received her education, graduating in 1940 from Hanska High School. On February 16, 1944 she was married to Julene Gordon Johnson and they farmed near Hanska. In 1961, Julene and Evie purchased a farm on Cherry Lake near Atwater, where Evie pursued her many interests. She loved collecting and refinishing antiques with her friend Jana Olson. She also heeded her father's advice to "leave the world a better place than you found it" through planting flowers, shrubs and trees on the farm. She enjoyed traveling, reading, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, along with writing letters to her family and friends. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Her last activity was attending the church service and enjoying coffee afterward with her church family. Her love, her spunk, and her sense of humor will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Julene Johnson of Willmar; six children, Jeffrey (and Gretchen) Johnson of Moneta, Virginia, Jay (and Jeanette) Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Jennifer (and Allen) Petersen of Dripping Springs, Texas, James Johnson of Willmar, Jo Anne (and Keith) Agrimson of Utica, and Jana (and Shawn) Draper of Baltimore, Maryland; eleven grandchildren, Rachelle (and Greg) Fix, Aaron (and Karla) Johnson, Heather Johnson, Zachary (and Laura) Petersen, Rachel Helmbrecht, Samantha Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, Stephanie Agrimson, Jacob Agrimson, Abby Draper, Andrew Draper and four great grandchildren, Seth Johnson, Tessa Epple, Tyler Helmbrecht and Tiffany Helmbrecht. Also surviving is her sister, Verna Paulson of Osakis and her brother, Ervey Broste of Hanska, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Milton Broste.
