Fred Charles Champine, age 72, of New London, died Sunday evening, August 20, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, August 25, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Willmar with Chaplain Marlys Pearson officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Willmar V.F.W. and American Legion Posts. There is no reviewal or visitation. Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Fred was born on February 6, 1934, in Yale, Michigan, the son of Fred and Yvonne (Grymonprez) Champine. He grew up and received his education in the Mt. Clemens area. Fred served in the U.S. Army overseas during the Korean War. He was married to Jenny Serio and they lived in Centerline, Michigan where he worked various jobs. In 1994, he moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota and was employed at Fire Fly Creek Casino in the janitorial services. Due to his ill health, he has lived at nursing homes in Granite Falls, Clarkfield, Cosmos and in 2003 entered the Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion Post. Fred enjoyed playing cards, watching T.V. and in his younger years traveling and camping.
He is survived by one son, Mark (and Susan) Champine of Mt. Clemens, MI; two grandchildren, Alicia and David Champine and one sister, Betty (and Laverne) Korthuis of Granite Falls, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother in infancy.
