ValGene "Gene" D. Ryer, age 72, of rural Atwater, died Sunday morning, Janaury 9, at his home following an extended illness.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 13, at Tripolis Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Kandiyohi. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
ValGene Delaine Ryer was born May 6, 1938, in rural Montevideo, to James and Pearl (Falla) Ryer. He grew up in the Montevideo area and attended country school and later Montevideo High School. On September 15, 1956, Gene married Judy Wilson and they made their home in Montevideo. Gene worked as a plumber in Montevideo, Echo, and Sacred Heart before moving to rural Kandiyohi in 1985. He most recently worked for Doyle's Plumbing in Kandiyohi. He also opened and closed lake cabins in the area and did siding work.
He is survived by his wife: Judy; two sons: Don (and Lori) Ryer of Belview and Douglas Ryer of Granite Falls; two daughters: Valerie (and Martin) Messner of Kandiyohi and Brenda Luepke (and special friend, Loren Houdek) of Chandler, AZ; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two brothers: Wendell (and Sandra) Ryer of Granite Falls and Jerry (and Denise) Ryer of Montevideo; a sister: Marcia Halvorson (and special friend, David Sturges) of New Ulm; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son: Delano.
