Gerald W. Young, age 80, of Spicer, died Monday morning, September 5, 2011, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar from chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, Sept. 9, at the Cross Roads Community United Methodist Church in Spicer. Visitation will only be from 5-7 PM on Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Peterson Brothers Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer. Memorials to Cross Roads Community Church or Rice Hospice are preferred.
Gerald Wayne Young was born on July 20, 1931 in Hubbard, Texas to Wayne Elton and Lora Dale (Binford) Young. He was a long-time resident of Minnesota. He graduated from Tyler Texas High School and earned his Eagle Scout. He graduated from Texas Wesleyan College, Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University and earned his Mortuary Science degree at the University of Minnesota.
Gerald was a retired United Methodist pastor who served at Renville, Holman and Hamline in St. Paul, and South St. Paul. After leaving the ministry, he owned and operated a funeral home in Howard Lake for ten years. He was a member of Renville (now Olivia) Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Zuhrah Shrine Center. Other interests included music, golf and gardening. He was one of the charter members of the Cross Roads Community United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; four children, Rick (and Carrie) Young of Ellensburg, WA., Terri (and Daryl) Kidd of Ft. Worth, TX., Bryan Young of Ft. Worth, TX., and Diane (and Mike) Umphress of Ft. Worth, TX.; three stepchildren, Catherine (and Todd) Berghoff of Mayer, Jim (and Renita) Van Dusen of Minneapolis and Laura (and Bill) Hansen of Longville; 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his mother, Lora Dale Young of Denison, TX., one brother, Glen (and Karen) Young of Denison, TX., besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; one grandson, Nathan and two sisters, Lora Jane and Barbara Dale.
