Dr. Donald O. Gilman, age 100, of Willmar, died Friday morning, February 24, at the Willmar Care Center.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 1, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Military Honors will be provided by the Willmar American Legion Post #167.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Memorials to the Disabled American Veterans or the Willmar Area Food Shelf are preferred. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
Dr. Donald Orrin Gilman was born June 23, 1911, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Albert and Mathilda (Bonde) Gilman. He grew up in Willmar, was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and graduated from Willmar High School in 1929. He then attended Macalester College and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. In 1935, he began his dental practice in Atwater. On July 23, 1938, he married Donna Samstad in Atwater. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii and Iwo Jima. Following his discharge, he served many years in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel. In 1952, Donald and Donna moved to Willmar and Donald founded his dental practice on Trott Avenue, which he operated until his retirement in 1981 at the age of 70.
He was a member of the American Dental Association, West Central Dental Society, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, University of Minnesota Alumni Association and Vinje Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife: Donna of Willmar; two daughters: Carmen (and Clark) Borstad of Detroit Lakes and Audrey (and Roger) Omlid of Minnetonka; four grandchildren: Leslie Borstad, Frederick Borstad, Molly Omlid Schmidt and Theodore Omlid; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers: Dr. Lloyd Gilman, Dr. James Gilman and Allan Gilman.
