Glenn Grahn, 87, of Atwater, died Saturday at Cedar Crest Estates in Cosmos.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater, with burial to follow at Atwater Union Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Atwater branch of the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Donna Grahn Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Glenn Charles Grahn was born on August 22, 1925, to Elsie (Goeritz) and Walter Grahn in Arlington, MN. Glenn was two years old when his father died, and when Glenn was 16, Elsie married William Oestreich of Hutchinson. Following graduation from Hutchinson High School, he attended Drake University and Augsburg College. He started working for the Minnesota Highway Department in 1946 as a surveyor and ended his 37-year career as a Traffic Engineer with MN/DOT's District 8 in Willmar.
Glenn married Donna Sykora of Windom on October 4, 1952, and they made their home in Atwater. To this union was born a daughter and a son: Karen is a professional singer living in New York with her husband Konstantin (Dino) Goulianos, and Gary lives with his wife Lori in Atwater and works for MN/DOT in Willmar. Donna passed away in 1982. On September 20, 1986, Glenn and Verlynne (Eliason) Rostad of Atwater were married and lived together in Atwater until his death.
Glenn was an excellent athlete, having played football and baseball at Augsburg, and was an accomplished golfer and bowler. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada. Glenn had special skills as a woodworker and crafted many beautiful pieces. Barbershop singing was a passion he held onto his whole life, and enjoyed singing lead for many years in a local quartet. Glenn loved watching all sports, especially the Twins, Timberwolves, and any Gopher team that was on TV.
When Glenn and Donna moved to Atwater, they joined the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where Donna was the organist and Glenn sang tenor in the choir. After Donna passed away, Glenn established the Donna Grahn Memorial Scholarship to help local students go to college.
Glenn is survived by his wife Lynne; daughter Karen (Dino) Goulianos of New York; son Gary (Lori) Grahn of Atwater; stepdaughter Chris (Mike) Kingery of Grove City; stepson Rich Rostad of White Bear Lake; stepson Tim (Suzie) Rostad of Fergus Falls; grandsons Eric (DeLisa) Grahn of Atwater and Darron Grahn of Marshall; four great-grandchildren (Giselle, Naya, Gradyn and Sammy); step-grandson Derek Schultz; fifteen step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; and stepsister Toby Oestreich Soltow of Annandale and five step-nieces.
Glenn is preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather, his first wife Donna, and his stepbrother Ray Oestreich.
