Gordon "Red" Peterson, age 82, of Willmar, died Tuesday, August 18, at Bethesda PleasantView Nursing Home in Willmar.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 and Finstad-Week V.F.W. Post #1639 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. Parish Prayer Service at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
Gordon Orville "Red" Peterson was born March 19, 1927, on the family farm north of Willmar, to Rudolph and Malla (Anderson) Peterson. He grew up on the family farm, attended Goldenrod School and later Willmar High School. While in high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a repair ship in the Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to high school, graduating in 1947. He attended post-secondary agriculture school and then began working on the family farm. On September 2, 1950, he married Betty Linhoff at the Church of St. Mary and they made their home on the farm. Red was the fourth generation to operate the dairy and crop farm. He retired in 1990 and continued to help on the farm. He was very proud of the family farm which is in now in the sixth generation.
Red was a member of the Church of St. Mary, the National Farmers Organization and the Kandiyohi County Fair Board. He was also a member of Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 and Finstad-Week V.F.W. Post #1639. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cabin on Diamond Lake. He also enjoyed watching Vikings football and Westerns and spending time with his grandchildren. Red loved to drive his golf cart around the farm to check on the operations.
He is survived by his wife: Betty; a son: Mark (and Deborah) Peterson of Willmar; two daughters: Barbara (and Allen) Kelm of Eagan and Nancy (and Larry) Schmidt of Farmington; five grandchildren: Jessica (and Josh) Hardy, Amanda Kelm (and fiance Tony Jueneman), Joseph (and Amy) Kelm, Grant Schmidt and Wade Schmidt; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Stanley Johnson and Floyd Johnson.
