Harriet Haugen, 81, of Willmar, died Monday, May 13, at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Union Lutheran Church near Hannaford, ND. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the United Way's Imagination Library are preferred.
Harriet LaVaille (Stangeland) Haugen was born June 1, 1931 to Sverre and Bertha Stangeland in Hills, Minnesota.
Harriet grew up in Hills, MN and later Argusville, ND when her family moved to a farm just outside of town. She attended Argusville schools where she graduated in 1949. She attended Mayville State Teachers College for six weeks and then began teaching in a one-room school near Durban, ND. Harriet was a life-long educator, teaching for forty-four years. She dedicated her life to children and taught most of her teaching career in Hannaford. She went back to Mayville State College summers to finish her degree and earn her elementary principal's licensure.
Gilbert and Harriet were brought together by Gilbert's brother, Mervin and Harriet's sister Corlyn. They were married October 5, 1957 in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Fargo. They made there home on the family farm in rural Hannaford, ND.
Harriet is survived by her husband, Gilbert; sons, Neal (Julene)of Atwater, and Brent (Tracy) of Benson; seven grandchildren, Kalene (Grant) Sharstrom, Trey, Elise, Cameron, Kaytlyn, Hayley, and Brayden; and one great-grandchild, Jameson.
