Hazel M. Kusler, age 82, of Atwater, died Friday morning, August 30, at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, South Dakota.
A memorial service will be held at 1 P.M., Saturday, September 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atwater. The interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be from 11:30 A.M Saturday until time of service at the church. Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home.
Hazel Mary (Shaffer) Kusler was born on February 5, 1931, in Martin County near Ceylon, Minnesota, the daughter of Dewey Frank and Mary Ellen (Howard) Shaffer. She grew up in the Martin County area and later moved with her parents to the Sherburn, Minnesota area. There she attended county school and completed her education in the Sherburn Public Schools. On September 30, 1948, she was married to Lawrence Louis Kusler in Fairmont and they made their home in Jackson, Minnesota. They moved to Atwater in 1955 and Hazel worked for the grocery store from 1962 to 1973. In the early 1990's, she worked out of the Atwater City Offices with the Green Thumb Program, a federal program. In December of 2007, she moved to Watertown, South Dakota, to be near her family and for the past 3 1/2 years she has resided at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. She has been a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1955 and was active in the ladies groups and was active with the Atwater American Legion Auxiliary. In 1984, Hazel and Larry received the Good Neighbor Award. She loved being with family and friends and enjoyed working on family history.
She is survived by four daughters: Darcy (and Fred) Anderson of Mountain Iron, Nancy (and Jere) Volkart of Watertown, SD, Merry (and Les) Lemke of Watertown, SD, and Linda (and Dale) Holmgren of Norfolk, AR. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter; besides other relatives and friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Larry in 2006; and two brothers: Lyle Shaffer and Willis Shaffer.
