Helen C. Hawes, age 97, of Atwater, died Friday morning, May 13, at Rice Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 16, at the United Methodist Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home.
Helen Christina Hawes was born on October 19, 1913, on the family homestead near Kandiyohi, the daughter of Charles and Lena (Grahn) Bengtson. She grew up in the Kandiyohi community, attended nearby country school and graduated from Willmar High School in 1931. On May 2, 1936, in Atwater, Helen was united in marriage to Fay H. Hawes. They made their home on a farm near Atwater. Helen hard worked as a homemaker and also part-time at Stacy's Nursery. She was a longtime member of the Atwater United Methodist Church and was very active in the ladies aide. Helen enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking. She made wonderful sour cream raisin pie and fresh bread. Helen also kept a nice flower and vegetable garden.
She is survived by her four children, Charles Hawes of Atascadero, CA, Shirley Botten (and Vernon Johnson) of Inver Grove Heights, James Hawes of Atwater and Larry Hawes (and Jan Stutelberg) of Farmington; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Anna Mae Bengtson of Atwater, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fay in December of 2009, three grandchildren, Danny, Jessie and Lisa; two brothers, Kenneth and Arthur; and a daughter-in-law, Florence.
