Helen L. Hawkinson, age 91, of Kandiyohi, died Saturday morning, January 17, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, at Ebenezer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Helen Lorraine Hawkinson was born on August 27, 1923, in Pennock, Minnesota, the daughter of Elias and Alma (Rasmussen) Greenfield. She grew up in rural Pennock, attended District #93 School in Pennock and graduated from Willmar High School in 1941. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Pennock. On June 8, 1947, Helen was united in marriage to James Marvin "Marv" Hawkinson at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Pennock. They lived in Spicer, Pennock and Kandiyohi. Helen was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi and was active in Sunday School, women's groups and other church activities. Helen worked at the Kandiyohi Coop Creamery, West Central Industries and the Kandiyohi County Treasurer's office. She was a member of the Spicer American Legion, Kandi Senior Citizens, Women's Civic Club, and Kandiyohi Sewing Club where she often hosted their Christmas parties. Helen also volunteered at the Rice Hospital visitor's desk.
She is survived by her four children, Jim (and Mary) Hawkinson of Kandiyohi, Marcia (and Gary) Holt of North Mankato, Brad (and Kris) Hawkinson of Kandiyohi and Bill Hawkinson of Kandiyohi; six grandchildren, Hannah (and Justin) Grap of San Jose, CA., Jake (and Randy) Holt of Ft. Worth, TX., Rebekah (and Justin) Sands of San Diego, CA., Molly Hawkinson of Seattle, WA., Heidi Hawkinson of Honolulu, HI., and Charlie Hawkinson of Kandiyohi; and five great grandchildren, Alexandra, Avery and Andrew Holt, Carly Grap and Jaxson Sands. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Gary (and Joni) Greenfield, Marie (and Ron) Halderson, Mark (and Kris) Freeman, Sara (and John) Rekow, Cary (and Todd) Friedrich and Maret (and Edmund Ashley) Freeman; grandnieces and grandnephews, Erin, Tara, Megan and Dawson Freeman, Ryan (and Hillary) and Ross Friedrich, Emily and Anna Rekow and Peter and Helen Ashley, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marv in 1991; one granddaughter, Jennifer Tjelle Hawkinson in 1991; two brothers, Elmo and Parker Greenfield and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hawkinson Freeman.
