J. Arnold Berg, 96, of Atwater, died Monday, April 4, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, at the United Methodist Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Atwater at a later date. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home in Atwater and one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the Samstad-Jensen American Legion Post of Atwater. Memorials are preferred to the Atwater Block Nursing Program, Atwater United Methodist Church, or Honor Flight South Dakota.
John Arnold Berg was born on March 31, 1915 to Charles John and Annie Marie (Anderson) Berg in Genessee Township, Kandiyohi County. He graduated from Hawthorne School-District #41. He graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago in 1939, and worked for local electricians and the Kandiyohi County REA. He served in the Army in World War II for 52 months in Northern Ireland, North Africa and Italy. After the war, Arnold and two of his brothers ran their own gas station and livestock hauling business in Atwater. He later worked for several electricians, and in 1950 he started his own electrical wiring business, Berg Electric, which he ran for 50 years. He married Lillian Aurora Bergquist on June 28, 1947 in Dassel and they made their home in Atwater. He served on the Atwater School Board for a total of 24 years and received the Outstanding School Board Member award from the Minnesota School Boards Association in 1980. He was an active member of the Atwater Methodist Church, the American Legion, the Atwater Threshers organization, and was a volunteer firefighter. He won several Christmas lighting awards from NSP in the 1960s. He enjoyed traveling and camping with his family, wood working and gardening.
He is survived by one sister, Annette (Martin) Buer; one son, Charles (Virginia Hughes) Berg of Mankato and one daughter, Linda (James) Kotschevar of Waite Park; three grandchildren, Jason Kotschevar of St. Cloud, Cole Kotschevar of St. Cloud and Alyssa Berg of Mankato; and one great grandson, Connor Kotschevar of St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by his wife, six brothers and one sister.
