Atwater
James H. Brown, age 89, of Atwater, died Friday morning, December 15th, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, December 18th, at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Willmar with Rev. David Rogers officiating. The interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Atwater. Friends may call from 4-6 P.M. Sunday at the Atwater Funeral Home and at the church one hour prior to the services.
James Howard Brown was born on January 1, 1917 in Marcus, Iowa, the son of Jesse Faye (Bosworth) and Howard Frew Brown. He grew up in the Paullina, Iowa, area and graduated from Paullina High School in 1935. Jim started to farm in the Paullina area and on June 5, 1940, he married Katherine Van Maasdam and they made their home on his farm. They farmed in the Paullina and Royal, Iowa, area until 1955 when they moved to rural Atwater. Jim went into the carpentry business full time in about 1961 and he built his own home in Atwater. They moved into Atwater in 1966 and he has lived in Atwater since. He was a former member of the Atwater Baptist Church and was a current member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Willmar. Jim was an active member in both churches, holding many offices and serving on several boards and as a Sunday School Teacher. He loved being with family and friends and had a large garden that he loved to share with others. Jim was a devoted sports fan, followed the high school sports teams, was a big Yankees fan, enjoyed bowling and had been a pitcher in the fast pitch softball league in his younger years.
James is survived by two sons: Ben (and Carol) Brown of Fairfax and Dan Brown of South Haven and three daughters: Betty (and Robert) Paulson of Atwater, Linda (and Jim) Wines of Maple Grove, and Jean (and Bruce) Scott of Champlin. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and one brother, Robert Lee (and Marge) Brown of Germantown, Wisconsin, besides other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Katherine in 2001; one brother: William Brown; and five sisters: Margret Green, Eva Werner, Lucy Werner, Helen Moser, and Mary Libke.
