James Herman Holmquist, age 82, of Willmar, died Friday morning, June 25, at Rice Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 28, at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Willmar American Legion Post# 167. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday with a Daughters of Isabella Rosary Service at 10:00 AM. Funeral arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
James Herman Holmquist was born on February 27, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Martin and Esther (Freeman) Holmquist. He grew up and received his education in the Willmar community and began employment as a truck driver. From 1945 to 1946, he served with the Seabee's in the U.S. Navy being stationed in the Philippine Islands. On April 18, 1953, James was united in marriage to Marcella Wagner and they made their home in Willmar. James was employed for over 40 years with the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement, James was a personal driver to the Minneapolis airport for many individuals and was also a West Central Tribune newspaper carrier. He was a member of the Church of St. Mary and the American Legion Post #167. James enjoyed horses, golfing and spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella of Willmar; six children, Debra (and John) Pikus of Spicer, Jodi (and Tony) Neis of Willmar, Terry (and Gary) Guenther of Willmar, Cheryl Holmquist of Willmar, Brad (and Jodi) Holmquist of Clear Lake and Tom (and Sue) Holmquist of Willmar; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Also surviving is a brother, Richard (and Gwen) Holmquist of Florida and a sister, Phyllis Blomberg of Willmar, besides other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one great granddaughter, Hannah; three brothers, Harold, Lester and Oliver; and five sisters, Edna, Helen, Ethel, Alice and Florence.
