James P. Hyland, Jr. , age 91, of Griswold, Iowa, formerly of Willmar, Minnesota, died on Sunday August 4, 2013 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held August 13th at 11 a.m. at the Creighton University Retreat Center, Griswold, IA. On August 12th a rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM followed by a visitation from 7 to 8 PM, at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold, IA.

Additional services will be at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar, MN. Visitation at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 17, followed by a Mass at 2 p.m.. Military Honors will be provided by the Austin F. Hansom American Legion Post 167 of Willmar. The interment will be at the Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Willmar..

James Patrick Hyland, Jr. was born on September 8, 1921 in Waterbury, CT, the son of James and Margaret Hyland, Sr. He joined the National Guard coast artillery in 1937and then was called to active duty in 1941. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the taking of Nuremburg, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. In 1946, he joined the newly formed United States Air Force. He served during the Korean Conflict and received the Korean Service Medal with five battle stars. He retired from the military in 1963 as a master sergeant with over 26 years of service to his country. He married Margaret Jones on April 4, 1944 in Seattle, WA. Upon his military retirement they moved to Willmar, MN with their daughter Julianne. He was the business manager for Eid's Refrigeration Company of Willmar, MN until retiring again in 1985. After his wife's death in 1986, he moved to Griswold, IA. He was an extremely religious man, who was always involved in the Roman Catholic church wherever he was stationed or lived.

James is survived by one daughter: Julianne (Duane) Adams of Griswold, IA. Two grandchildren: Stacey (Tracy) Sothman of Bennington, NE and Keith (Katy) Adams of Omaha, NE. Five great grandchildren: Brittany Adams, Briana Adams, Ethan Sothman, Dylan Adams, and Miranda Sothman. One great-great grandchild: Arthur Harpeneau. Also surviving is one sister, Margaret Miller of Apache Junction, AZ, many nephews and nieces, and special friends Ron and Julie Roufs, Lori Hansen, and Andrew Roufs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three children, two brothers, and two sisters.
