James "Jim" Robert Ackerman

James "Jim" Robert Ackerman, age 80 of rural New London, passed away peacefully Sunday morning,  September 18, at his residence.

Jim was born March 21, 1942 in Willmar, MN to Robert Ackerman & Marv Hogan Schiro, was baptized at Vinje Lutheran Church and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. He graduated from Cosmos High School in 1960 as the first athlete to letter in 3 sports for 4 consecutive years. Jim graduated with a double major in Mathematics & Physical Education from St. Cloud State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Welander, and was blissfully married for 56+ years. Jim evolved through numerous roles as a well-loved teacher, extremely successful varsity coach of 6 different sports, and athletic director in Oregon, Germany, and England over 20 years. Together Jim and Jan lived an adventurous life in Europe traveling to 22 countries and enjoyed skiing, canal boating and camping. He was an avid fisherman, bow-hunter, gifted craftsman, and handyman. Jim was a Conklin Company area manager and a Masonic Lodge Master Mason in Hood River, OR.

In 1986 the family moved to Willmar, MN to continue the 3-generation Schiro’s Shoe Repair business for 31 more years. In 1992 he was the Master of Willmar’s Masonic Lodge #104. Jim enjoyed his retirement years with wife Jan playing cards, dancing, riding his bicycle, and tinkering around the homestead. “Mr. Wonderful’s” quick-witted humor, gentle spirit, and dedication to his entire family will always be remembered and cherished.

Jim is survived by the love of his life Janice Ackerman; children Stephanie (Chuck) Ramirez, Jeffrey Ackerman, and Jessica Ackerman; grandchildren Kasey James Monique) Williamson, Jordan Williamson; brothers Larry and Chris Ackerman; sister-in-law Joyce Ackerman; brother-in-law Gary (Karen) Welander; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marv & Hubert Schiro, father Robert Ackerman; brother Rick Ackerman; and sister-in-law Cathy Ackerman.
