James Madison

June 7, 1926 — March 30, 2013

James H. Madison, 86, of Willmar, died Saturday afternoon, March 30, at Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home in Willmar.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 of Willmar. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.

James Howard Madison was born June 7, 1926, near Pennock, Minnesota, the son of John and Hannah (Nelson) Madison. He was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar and attended Willmar schools. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II. In 1947, he married Doris Tangen. They had two sons, Doug and Randy. James worked several years for Quality and Central Dairy. In 1975, he began working as a custodian at the Kandiyohi County Courthouse, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church,, the American Legion and the D.A.V. James enjoyed camping, fishing, deer hunting, and sharing stories of his time in the Army. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids.

He is survived by two sons, Doug (and Diane) Madison and Randy (and Marlene) Madison, both of Willmar; five grandchildren. Scott (and Sue) Madison of St. Cloud, Tammy (and Jesse) Swanson of Pennock, Rick (and Mary) Madison of Spicer, Bill (and Sarah) Madison of Fergus Falls; and Sara (and Luke) Sjoberg of Willmar; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Megan McBride, Christopher and Hunter Madison (and another great-grandchild due in May), Mitchel, Alexys and Allyse Swanson, Payton and Emma Madison, Mia and Alex Madison, and Hunter, Addie, Hudson and Owen Sjoberg. Also surviving are a sister, Nadine Carlson of Willmar; five sisters-in-law, Leona, Norma, Ruby, Florence and Dorothy; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris in April 2011; two brothers, Roy and Ray; and four sisters, Ida, Ione, Pearl and Vila.
