Jerry A. Bengtson, age 74, of Atwater, died Saturday evening, April 19, at his residence in rural Atwater.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the United Methodist Church in Atwater. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Atwater Funeral Home (www.petersonbrothers.com).
Jerry Arthur Bengtson was born March 1, 1940, the son of Arthur and Fern (Peterson) Bengtson on the family farm in Gennessee Township, rural Atwater. He was baptized, confirmed on April 19, 1953 and a lifelong member of the Atwater United Methodist Church. He attended country grade school, District 41, and Atwater High School, graduating in 1958. On January 17, 1959, Jerry was united in marriage to Judith A. Anderson. Together they raised three sons. They made their home on the family farm in rural Atwater, where Jerry drove milk truck and later became a butter maker for Kandiyohi Co-op Creamery. In 1969, Jerry began working as a delivery person/salesman for Wonder Bread and Hostess Cake in Willmar. Throughout his career, he enjoyed meeting customers and spending time with his co-workers and their families. He retired from Wonder Bread in 1997 after 28 years of service. In 1999, he started working part-time for Runnings in Willmar until his retirement in 2010.
In his early years, Jerry enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, deer hunting, and old time dance music. After his retirement, he enjoyed being home on the farm, the outdoors, repairing things, wildlife and nature, feeding the birds, taking care of his barn cats and taking short trips. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and will be remembered as caring and helpful.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy; sons, Mike Bengtson of St. Joseph and Daryl (and Deborah) Bengtson of Spicer; grandchildren, Justin (and Michelle) Bengtson, Kala (and Dan) Linder, Brandon (and Lydia) Bengtson, Charity Bengtson and Austin Bengtson; great-grandchildren, Dakota Bengtson, Madeline Bengtson, Zoey Bengtson, Ellie Bengtson, and Holden Linder; sisters-in-laws, Sandy Bengtson and Darlene A. Anderson; brother-in-law, Larry (and Janice) Anderson; aunt, Anna Mae Bengtson of Atwater; his nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joel Bengtson; brother, Randall Bengtson; two sisters-in-law, Susan Noble and Marlys Jean Anderson; and a niece, Cynthia.
