Jerry "Jake" Jacobsen, 78, of Willmar, died unexpectedly, Monday evening, July 12, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
Gerald Gene Jacobsen was born March 9, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Gordon and Lenore (Franklin) Jacobsen. As a young child, he moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1951. He worked for Chapman Oil Company in Detroit Lakes before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1954. On September 7, 1957, he married Karyn "Kaye" Rognrud in Detroit Lakes and they made their home in Willmar. Jerry worked as a service representative for Mobil Oil in Willmar. From 1961 to 1981, he owned and operated Jacobsen Pump and Tank Service. Jerry then worked as head of shipping and receiving for West Central Steel until his retirement on October 8, 2008.
Jerry was a member of the Church of St. Mary, where he was a Scout Master for Boy Scout Pack 227 and sang in the church choir. He was also a former member of the Willmar Jaycees. He loved spending time with his family and his dogs, and especially hunting at the cabin with the boys. He enjoyed music and dancing, playing Scrabble and cards. Jerry was also an expert woodworker and loved to share his craft with others.
He is survived by his wife: Kaye; five sons: Timothy Jacobsen of Roseville, Richard (and Sheila) Jacobsen of Rogers, Jon (and Janet) Jacobsen of Willmar, Michael (and Kristin) Jacobsen of New London and Patrick (and Brenda) Jacobsen of New London; nine grandchildren: Brian, Shaun, Megan, Mandy, Tommy, Zachary, Ali, Ben, and Jessica Jacobsen. Also surviving is his "Turkish Daughter" Sade Johannes of Willmar, his "German Granddaughter", Miriam Junggeburth of Cologne, Germany, sister-in-law Ginny Jacobsen of Melbourne FL, and nieces Jilly Keenon, of Denver CO, and Joy (and Eric) Bartlett of Jacksonville FL, besides many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Thomas, of Melbourne, FL in January of this year.
