Joel G. Gunderson, age 65, of rural Brooten, died Thursday morning, September 13, at his home following a battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Knutson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by V.F.W. Post #1825 of Belgrade.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Sunburg Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Joel G. Gunderson was born September 4, 1942, in Camp Lake Township, Swift County, near Swift Falls, Minnesota, the son of Jerome and Gladys (Thompson) Gunderson. He grew up in the rural Sunburg community and attended country school and later Brooten High School, graduating in 1960. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked on his dairy farm north of Sunburg his entire working life and loved his cattle.
He enjoyed hunting and farm, threshing and tractor shows, especially Allis Chalmers tractors. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially family gathering and holidays.
Joel is survived by his mother, Gladys Stai of Sunburg; a brother, David Gunderson of Sunburg; five sisters, Marlys (and Ronald) Torkelson of Kerkhoven, Janice (and Leland) Hanson of Sunburg, Doreen (and Brian) Syverson of Sedan, Judy (and James) Ellingson of Sunburg and Marge (and Rod) Gronseth of Sunburg; eleven nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Gunderson; and three brothers, Wesley Gunderson, Robert Gunderson and an infant brother.
