John Sebey, 68, of Willmar, died Sunday morning, October 14, at his home in Willmar following a seven month battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in the Echo City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.
John Robert Sebey was born January 23, 1944, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, the son of Prescott and Magdalen (Holland) Sebey. He grew up and received his education in Echo, graduating from Echo High School. In high school he played football, being on the undefeated 9-man team, basketball, baseball and competed in track and field, setting several school records. He then attended Worthington Junior College, where he continued to play football. Following college, John worked for Goodyear in Redwood Falls. On September 2, 1967, he married Marjorie Kay Weidemann in Belview and they made their home in Echo. In May 1969, they moved to Willmar, where John began a career as a sales representative for Gamble Robinson, later known as Food Services of America, retiring after 32 years. In retirement, John worked on the grounds crew at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
John enjoyed playing all sports and was a natural athlete, excelling in any sport he participated in. Before retirement, he played softball, racquetball and golf every chance he had, especially his Tuesday league and Saturday morning foursome. After retirement, he relaxed playing a little pickleball and lots of golf along with the honor of joining the "Wednesday Golf Geezers." He was a member of the Eagle Creek Golf Club, a past board member of the Eagle Creek Golf Club, a member of the Elks and Vinje Lutheran Church, serving as a past usher. He enjoyed visiting with friends at Frieda's and Cornerstone Coffee and spending time with his family at their cabin on Nest Lake.
John is survived by his wife, Marge; his children, Marci (and Todd) Iverson of Willmar and Patrick (and Laurie) Sebey of Willmar; four grandchildren, Brandon & Emma Sebey and Preston & Julia Iverson; a sister: Mary Nicholson of Lombard, IL; a brother, Paul Sebey of Havre, MT; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Prescott & Magdalen Sebey; a brother-in-law, John Nicholson; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Sebey.
