John M. Thorstad, 64, of Willmar, died Monday, June 17, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar with military honors provided by Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
John Martin Thorstad was born June 9, 1949, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Merrill "Shorty" and Marilda "Cookie" (Quale) Thorstad. He grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School, where he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, wrestling and baseball. He was nicknamed "Wing-Footed" Johnny Thorstad. John served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked for Ft. Snelling National Cemetery for several years before returning to the Willmar area. John enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, traveling and being around people.
He is survived his girlfriend, Pamela NgaNga of Willmar; a daughter, Connie (and Brian) Lawler of Carver; two grandchildren, Colin and Claire Lawler; Pamela's daughter, Halaina Barnes; his beloved dog, Little Bear; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
