Joni Lee Johnston, age 54, of Alexandria and Eden Prairie, formerly of Willmar, died Sunday, May 5, at her home in Eden Prairie.
A time of gathering and sharing will be held from 5-7 PM Friday, May 10, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Memorials are preferred, donor's choice. (www.petersonbrothers.com)
Joni Lee Johnston was born on March 7, 1959 in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of Lois M. (Gilbertson) and Donald A. Johnston. She grew up in Willmar, was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church and graduated from Willmar High School in 1977. She continued her education at Willmar Community College and graduated from Mankato State University with a business and finance degree in 1981. She went to work for Bremer Financial Service and American Bank Corporation and later for First State Bank of New Brighton as an auditor until 1986. Joni worked in Super Valu Corporate Offices and then moved to Cincinnati for one year to be product manager for Krogers Hartz Mountain. She returned to the Minneapolis area and worked as product manager at Best Buy's Corporate Office and later made a career change and became a Realtor and marketing consultant for Edina Realty. Joni retired early in March of 2012 so she could move to Alexandria to be with her husband.
Joni was married on March 3, 2007, to Robert "Bob" Johnson from Morris, Minnesota. Both maintained their separate jobs and homes in their hometowns in addition to their new home in Alexandria. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling (especially with her husband on annual trips to Mexico, San Diego and Las Vegas and trips to Australia and Europe with her mother prior to her marriage), golfing, shopping, cars, going to the Ordway Theater, and relaxing with Bob at their lake cabin on Minnewaska. Joni was a toastmaster when she first moved to the cities and was active at her church in the cities, did volunteer work for the various companies she worked at and was on the board for her town home association. She was always there to help a friend or her family.
She is survived by her husband Bob Johnson of Morris, stepdaughter, Christine (and Andy) Banta and their son, Miles of Morris and their beloved Yorkie Terrier, Mercedes. Also surviving is her father, Don Johnston of Willmar, sister, Judy (and Rod) Hayes of Hillman, niece Katelyn Hayes of Hillman, special aunt, Alice Gjerde of Willmar and special uncle and Godfather, James Johnston of Canton, Georgia, besides other relatives and friends.
Joni was preceded in death by her mother, Lois Johnston, nephew, Jamie Hayes and grandparents; Nels and Amy Gilbertson and Arthur and Anna Johnston.
